Film Industry
The Film Industry
Pre-production is the process of planning stage before the film
is made such as props, locations, cast members and costumes are determined.
This usually only happens when the film is green lit which means when the film
has been agreed upon and is financially stabled to start the film making process.
Production is when the film is recorded live and where the
filming finally starts to take place once all arrangements are in place.
Post-Production is the part once all filming is completed
and where editors get involved to edit the clips so everything seems seamless
but also to add SFX, VFX and transitions.
Fox Film Entertainment
The founder of "Fox Film Entertainment" is William Fox who founded the film studio corporation in 1915 and then the fox west coast theaters chain in the 1920s however William had to sell his companies interest to settle bankruptcy, although his the brand name lives on in many different medias such as Fox TV Network, Fox News Channel and more.
Fox film entertainment is one of the major film institution in America that produce many different films creating one of the biggest successful first 3D movie "Avatar".
| "Avatar" One of the first 3D Movies |
The fox company ownership is currently took by Rupert Murdoc and is still going at a steady pace of producing good quality movies such as x-men, planet of the ape and more.
Independent film is a professional film production whereas the feature film is produce outside of of a major film studio system. These independent films are usually distributed towards entertainment companies. These films usually have smaller budget that major film studio film because it's not connected with major studio.
Distribution of films
Film distribution this is when the film is allowed to be viewed by an audience. The people who have produce the film never distribute it their job is just to get the film done. Then they sell it off to another company who distribute the films. The film distributors job is to determine how the product will be marketed such as the release date or what sort of plan they decide to present this to the buyer/audiences. Most film distributors like to display the film to sale agents to find someone who will buy the film off them so they can sell film nationally to a wider audience or sale it to the big theaters/cinema companies. Distributors makes sure that a film doesn't get release on a date where another big film is being show since there could be a clash and most distributors don't want the audience to pick one film over another that way they don't lose money so they choose a particular date for the best release. Distribution is one of the important stages of film industries since without them there would be no sales.
Exhibition
There are many different ways audience view their films by but there is also many different types of software/programs that allow us to view films from home such as Netflix, Amazon Prime TV, LoveFilm, DVDs, downloading. These programs allow us to view content on different types of platform as they're compatible with tablets, smartphones, smartTVs, computers and more. Box office usually list most of the highest earning films because this tells people how much money was accumulated from tickets sells, DVDs sells, Online sells. Cinemas/theaters make income from selling tickets, selling refreshments and on-screen advertisements to the viewers making profit in return when buying the movie. Although other people may decide to stay home but to keep them coming to the cinema they must implemented comfortableness of seating and the surround to make visualization of the movie easier making it feel more immersed. The Ancillary markets are non-theatrical markets these are TV, Internet streaming, Online purchases or pay rental fees. So customers must pay before being able to view the content or may watch the film on the TV for free.
Marketing
Marketing process is the way the film is being displayed to the audience to attract customers to wanting to watch the film. There are many different type of ways of how film market to their audience such as billboards, posters, bus stops, buses and many more. These either be electronic media such as computers where they could post trailers or have a official website. On the other hand there is also social networking sites where it allows the audience to share and help market the name of the film to other friends, family, work colleagues and so forth.

The Film Industry
ProductionThe stages involved in producing a film are:
- Pre-production- during this stage planning takes place. For example, a detailed schedule is produced and location, props, cast members and costumes are decided.
- Production- this is the part where filming takes place
- Post-production- during this part the film is put together by editing. Effects and sound is added during this process.
Distribution - this is the final stage where the film is released in cinema.
American Producers
One of my favourite producers has to be John Singleton. He produced famous films like Boys N The Hood, Higher Learning and Poetic Justice.
DreamWorks Animation, this is owned by Steven Spielberg. This particular film organisation specialise in animated films for children.
20th Century Fox, this is owned by Joseph M. Schenck. This film organisation has made successful film series such as ice age, planet of the apes and die hard.
Independent Production: Is a production where an artist has complete control over creativity as well as editorial and artistic elements.
Distribution of Films.
Film distribution is when making a film available for viewing by an audience. The people who produce the film don't distribute the movie, their are Film Distributors who distribute the film. There job is to determine the marketing strategy for the film and may set the release date.
The tradition way of distributing films is to show your film to many good sales agent, so that they can take the film on. Also enter the films in keys festivals, advertise the film to distributors so they can sell your film worldwide. when the films has been seen and when bought the film will probably go to the cinemas, hopefully!.Distributors decide to release a film on one particular weekend rather than another because there is a possibility that another film is going to be released that weekend, and the distributor doesn't want the audience to choose to see one film and not the other.Distribution is very essential to the film chain because, without the film being distributed the film won't get bought, it will not make it to cinemas and it won't sell worldwide.
Exhibition
Audiences view films by going to the cinema, going on film sites such as Netflix, buying DVDs, downloading movies from illegal sites and streaming film from illegal sites.
A Box Office is usually a list of the highest grossing films, films that are on that list are the films that are popular and have received a lot of money from ticket sales.
Box office return is useful to identify the success of a film because it shows how much money was generated and how films are ranked, so far Avatar is at the top.
Cinemas make their money by selling tickets, selling refreshments and on screen advertisements.
To get people to go to the cinema rather than watching a film at home, they make the cinema more comfortable, for example the Hackney Picture House, the seating in that cinema is comfortable and the seats are recliners too so you can lay back and relax whilst watching the film, its as if your at home.
Ancillary markets are non-theatrical markets for feature films such as television, internet streaming and pay per view. This is a form of exhibition because the film can be accessed on TV but, the public has to pay for it before they can see the film.
BFI is the British Film Institute, they are required to encourage the development of the arts of film, television and moving image in the United Kingdom to promote education about film, television and moving images.
Marketing
Marketing is when a business advertises their product or service to the public or to their relevant audience. Distribution is different to Marketing because marketing is what events occur when the film is going to be released in cinemas and you can see the posters of the movie on buses and billboards. However, Distributing is the process of trying to the movie to cinemas.

The Film Industry
PRODUCTION
The stages are :
- Pre-Production - is the stage when all planning for the project takes place, during this step the production is broken down into individual scenes and all the locations, props, cast-members, costumes, special effects and visual effects are identified. If the script isn't complete its written at this stage. A schedule is produced and arrangements are made for necessary issues or people to be available to the film-makers.
- Production - The second stage is production, this is the stage where all the filming is carried out. All of the scenes that have been planned out in the 'Pre-Production' stage are filmed at the relevant locations. Each of the scenes are filmed many times as the director sees which scene is a good footage, to ensure that the best quality scenes will be used to construct the film. Great care must be taken when necessary shots are being taken and all the filming is done correctly. as it would be difficult or impossible to repeat certain events if the filming is incomplete when it comes to the 'Post-Production' stage.
- Post-Production - This stage is when the film is assembled by the editor, the first job the editor does is to do a rough cut taken from scenes based on individual shots. The purpose of the rough cut is to select and order the best shots. Secondly, the editor has to create a fine cut by getting all the shots to run smoothly in a seamless story. Trimming is the process when shortening scenes by a few minutes, seconds or even frames all of this is done during this phrase. All the music, graphics, menus etc. are added in this stage. after the fine cut has been screened and approved by the director and producer the picture can have no further changes, in other words its locked.
Now enough of the boring information !!!
THE TOP 5 MAIN PRODUCERS !!!
- Michael Mann, Produced films such as Miami Vice, Heat and Hancock
- James Cameron, Produced great films such as Titanic, Avatar and The Terminator
- Steven Spielberg, Produced films such as Jurassic Park , Casper and Jaws
- Spike Lee, Produced films such as Do the right thing and Malcom X
- Tony Scott Produced films such as Prometheus, Cats & Dogs, and The A-Team
- Quentin Tarantino Produced films such as Kill Bill, Django Unchained and Sin City
MAIN FILM STUDIOS !!!
The ownership of the studio might have an impact on what films the studio makes because it depends on what genre it is for example Dreamworks studios are mostly linked with Animations e.g. Shrek, so you won't see a action movie made under Dreamworks studio. Also it depends on the ownership, if they direct/produce more action and thriller movies then you will see that genre of movies under the studio, also they wouldn't like to produce an other type of genre because they profession is already set one genre already.

MARKETING

Most films have different trailers, for example The Purge trailer was originally had an English trailer since it was mad in America but there is now a trailer for the film in Spanish which is targeted for people who speak the language Spanish.

Box office return is useful to show the success of a movie because it conveys how much money was made and how the consumers ranked the film, Cinemas make their money by selling refreshments, on screen advertisements and of course tickets !.To get customers to go to the cinema is by making the cinema comfortable and convenient, the O2 Cineworld is a good example, because there are loads of screens and they have a VIP lounge also a new edition of seating the D-box seats where viewers can feel movement and vibration during the film also with a 3-D footage.
BFI is The British Film Institute, they are required to encourage the development of the arts of the film, television and moving image in the United Kingdom to advertise about film, television and moving images .

EXHIBITION
Film industries use test screening of a film before its release in order to see the audiences' reaction. Test screening is a way the audience is able to see a preview screening of a particular film.
We like to engage with films in many ways. We want to laugh, cry get grossed out even scream when we see a ghost on screen ! As part of an audience you want to be ENTERTAINED and this is something the film industry try to achieve.
Genres like comedy use humor to make their audience laugh out loud, horror films use spooky music and sound effects to engage the audience making them feel scared.
BOX OFFICE = A box office is a place at a cinema where tickets are bought or reserved.
How do cinemas make their money?
Cinemas make their money through the movie tickets, concessions and the onscreen advertisements.
Most of the money goes to the movie studio but in the first couple of weeks of the movie opening, the cinema only gets to keep about 20–25%.
They also make money from the concession stand. This is where all the snacks like popcorn and drinks are sold. No wonder why their snacks are so expensive!
Studios also pay cinemas to show trailers. So basically cinemas make a lot of money before the movie even starts from those annoying half an hour long constant adverts.
Ancillary Markets
These are non-theatrical markets for feature films, like home video, television, Pay Per View, VOD, Internet streaming, airlines and others.
